How to plan a meaningful NAF adhesive trial on a plywood line

A trial is only useful when material variables, process settings and acceptance criteria are recorded before production starts.

01

Start with the panel specification

Before selecting an adhesive, define the board construction, intended market and performance standard. A formulation that performs well in one plywood structure may require different settings in another.

The most useful starting brief includes veneer species, thickness, moisture range, glue spread, assembly time and the current hot-press schedule.

02

Control the variables that change the bond line

Do not change several major parameters at the same time. Establish a baseline, then adjust one controlled variable in each trial group.

  • Record water, powder and any permitted extender by weight.
  • Measure viscosity at a defined time and temperature.
  • Separate open assembly time from closed assembly time.
  • Label every panel so the test result can be traced back to its settings.

03

Agree on the acceptance method

The trial team should agree on conditioning time, specimen preparation and the required bond or emission test before pressing begins. This prevents a promising trial from producing results that cannot be compared.

Technical noteThis article provides general industrial guidance. Product selection and operating conditions must be confirmed against the applicable HPA documents and the customer's production trial.
